Review: Mot's Xyboard tablet rocks, but its stylus doesn't

Motorola Mobility's Droid Xyboard 10.1 tablet brings the iPad some solid competition thanks to its Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, thin profile, HD display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and compatiblity with Verizon's 4G LTE network. Yet, Motorola should take the hardware button design and new stylus option back to the drawing board, this eWEEK review adds....

UFC 140?s Three Stars: Jon Jones, Chan Sung Jung and Frank Mir

UFC 140?s Three Stars: Jon Jones, Chan Sung Jung and Frank Mir

UFC 140 marked the UFC's second trip to Toronto this year, and like UFC 129, it's another candidate for card of the year. The pay-per-view card alone would have earned that designation, but the preliminary fights had plenty of exciting moments from Igor Pokrajac, John Cholish and Jake Hecht.

Who stood tallest among giants? Here are Cagewriter's picks. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: Did that first round make you doubt? Seeing Jones confused on how to handle Machida's movement early in the fight made his win even more exciting. That was the first time Machida has ever been submitted in 20 fights. Jones' tally for the year: three submissions, one TKO, one belt won, two title defenses, and a well-earned vacation.

No. 2 star -- Chan Sung Jung: "The Korean Zombie" was the most unpopular man at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. He took advantage of Mark Hominick's aggressiveness from the bell, and knocked him right out. That earned him the UFC record* for fastest knockout, but also angered the fans who had gathered to watch hometown hero Hominick. He quickly calmed them by finding the right words to say in English, a language he doesn't speak. "I love Canadians!"

No. 3 star -- Frank Mir: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had Mir in trouble early in the bout, but Mir stayed calm and took advantage of his position. He rolled into a Kimura that MMA fans -- and Big Nog -- won't soon forget.

*Jung is now tied with Todd Duffee for a seven-second KO. Duane Ludwig is trying to get the time of his knockout of Jonathan Goulet amended by the Nevada Athletic Commission to earn him the record.

Phillipou and Pokrajac score first-round wins at UFC 140

The final preliminary fights from UFC 140 in Toronto Saturday night didn't last a single round between the two.

Igor Pokrajac ran through Kryzsztof Soszynski, knocking him out in just 35 seconds. Pokrajac started the bout with several unanswered punches, landing left after right until K-Sos fell to the ground. Pokrajac followed him there, and landed more strikes until K-Sos was out and the bout was stopped.

Phillipou and Pokrajac score first-round wins at UFC 140That quick win was Pokrajac's second in a row, giving him a record of 24-8. Soszynski fell to 26-12.

Earlier in the evening, Constantinos Phillipou won quickly, TKOing Jared Hamman in the first round with powerful strikes.

Philippou tagged Hamman early in the first round, countering a leg kick with a right hand. Phillipou followed up on the ground with more punches, then maneuvered Hamman into an awkward choke. Phillipou brought the fight back to standing, but kept landing damaging punches. Finally, against the fence, Phillipou landed three more shots that sent Hamman to the ground. The bout was stopped at 3:11 in the first round.

After the bout, Phillipou was happy with the performance, calling it the best day of his life. It's also his second win in a row, putting him at 9-2. Hamman dropped to 13-4.

Wouldn't it be great if 2012 turned out to be the year of the IPS panel? We don't want to get our hopes up just yet, but there are encouraging signs that point to this being a real possibility. Jon Jones wins the chess match, puts Lyoto Machida to sleep to defend his title at UFC 140

Jon Jones wins the chess match, puts Lyoto Machida to sleep to defend his title at UFC 140

Jon Jones refers to the often brutal sport of mixed martial arts as "a game he loves to play." It's seems like a strange way to refer to MMA, but Jones showed again tonight that he's quickly becoming the master of the game.

The UFC champ was getting outmaneuvered early in the fight, but as always made the necessary moves to first cut Lyoto Machida and then turns the lights out with a standing guillotine in the second round to successfully defend his UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 140.

"He's just smart. He kicked really hard. He knew his range. He has great tactics and definitely he was a very tough puzzle," Jones told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

Jones, who won the title back in March at UFC 128, has successfully defended in two times. All four of his wins in 2011 have come via stoppage.

Amazingly, he's posting these dominant victories by different means each time out. His physical gifts are off the charts, but it's the way he's mastering the mental game that makes him look more unbeatable each time out.

Machida (17-3, 9-3 UFC) is also a brilliant tactician, who really confused Jones in the opening round. The champ looked sloppy with his fists and landed a few leg kicks, but it was the challenger who landed the heaviest shots with a few well-timed flurries. When drilled Jones with overhand left with 5o seconds left, Machida locked up the first round.

"He didn't have me hurt, but he did punch me pretty good and it wobbled me a bit," Jones said. The champ looked at eating that punch as a positive. "It was good. One of my biggest critic points is that I can't take a punch, so I'm glad to prove it to myself, and to everyone that I can take a legit hit."

Jon Jones wins the chess match, puts Lyoto Machida to sleep to defend his title at UFC 140

Instead of turning up the aggression on Jones, Machida dialed it down a bit in the second. He let Jones get comfortable again.

With three minutes left in the round, Jones landed a right that stopped Machida in his tracks and worked the clinch for a big slam takedown. That's Jones' world and he immediately went to work from half guard. At 6-foot-4, Jones is a huge 2o5er. He imposed his size from the top and scraped a nasty elbow across Machida's forehead. The result was a deep gash that leaked blood into Machida's eyes.

"I know Lyoto's a black belt so I was expecting a lot more motion on the bottom, but he didn't move a lot and i was able to open him up," said Jones.

Machida got to his feet, the stop was stopped to check the cut for a few seconds and then reset. The fighters separated momentarily and both tried to throw the left hand. Machida's was a wide left hook and Jones was a short chopping left. The Jones shot landed and Machida went to his knees. His head was exposed as he stood back up where Jones landed a knee and locked on the standing guillotine along the cage.

The taller athlete cranked up and eventually Machida's right arm went limp. Referee John McCarthy stopped it and when Jones released the choke Machida fell flat on his face. He was out cold.

"It's not really a move that I practice. I think it's something that comes natural from wrestling for years. But yeah, it was a great lock. I realized that I had it, that I just needed to be tough and hold the position and eventually he'd run out."

Jones is showing off new weapons all the time. The fact that he finished off a top five light heavyweight with a move he's never practice is more proof of his greatness.

Diego Brandao wins ?The Ultimate Fighter? with BJJ skills

Diego Brandao wins ?The Ultimate Fighter? with BJJ skills

Though he showed knockout power over the course of the 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Diego Brandao won the season with submission prowess. He beat Dennis Bermudez with a first-round armbar.

Diego Brandao wins ?The Ultimate Fighter? with BJJ skillsThe featherweights came out winging punches, but it was Bermudez who got the advantage early, ducking from Brandao's punch, then taking him down and landing a huge ground shot before Brandao got back to his feet. Bermudez did not back down, but was knocked down by a Brandao punch three minutes in. Somehow, Bermudez survived and landed big strikes of his own. Brandao landed a flying knee, then tried to control Bermudez on the ground. Bermudez got back to his feet, narrowly avoiding a Brandao kick.

The fight took a turn in the final minute. Bermudez showed power of his own, knocking down Brandao late in the round with a short right. Bermudez threw punch after punch, and looked close to finishing the fight. Brandao avoided Bermudez's strikes, then grabbed on to Bermudez's arm. Brandao threw his legs over to secure a fast, perfect arm bar, and Bermudez tapped at 4:51 in the first round.

With that tap, Brandao won a six-figure contract with the UFC. The Brazilian who calls Wanderlei Silva his hero is looking forward to using his money to buy his mother a home in Brazil.

Canadian politicians object to UFC?s anti-bullying message in schools

Canadian politicians object to UFC?s anti-bullying message in schoolsThe UFC champions a message of anti-bullying, and Canada is one of the UFC's top regions. It makes sense that the UFC would want to bring that message to Canada, right?

Not to everyone. After a Toronto councillor put his support behind the UFC circulating a brochure created by the UFC, another politician ripped the idea in the Toronto Star.

"I think it's a terrible idea," said Pamela Gough, TDSB trustee for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. "Schools are all about peacemaking right now . . . we don't want to promote violence, we don't want to promote fighting."

The UFC isn't in schools to actually teach MMA; instead it wants to use its stature to talk about the problems with bullying. In a rally held in Toronto on Tuesday, four fighters talked about their experiences with bullying to children and took questions. The event was held in conjunction with the Toronto police.

Not everyone is against the UFC promoting anti-bullying. Doug Ford, the councillor who supported the idea in the first place, saw the positive in letting the UFC promote anti-bullying in schools.

"A lot of these kids, their idols are athletes, be it in football, or a hockey athlete, or a UFC athlete," Ford said in a telephone interview. "If we can get the message through some of their idols, I think it's a good message."

In April, the UFC made a $129,000 donation to a community center in Toronto. They often visit schools and martial arts centers in event cities to talk about the dangers of bullying. Georges St. Pierre, the welterweight champ and Canada's most successful fighter, often discusses how bullying affected him.

The fact is that with stretched budgets, schools are smart to partner with other groups, like the NFL has done with their Play 60 program. Football is a violent sport that produces injuries like concussions, broken bones, paralysis and even death. That doesn't make the NFL's message of 60 minutes of physical activity or support for physical education invalid.

Every school should have the right to vet its own partners, but that means taking a closer look at MMA and its athletes before dismissing a partnership. If the UFC can help students deal with bullying, then school officials and politicians should open their mind before turning down worthwhile help.

Federal domain seizure raises new concerns over online censorship

It's been a little more than a year since the US government began seizing domains of music blogs, torrent meta-trackers and sports streaming sites. The copyright infringement investigation, led by US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities, quickly raised eyebrows among many free speech and civil rights advocates, fueling a handful of legal challenges. Few are more compelling, or frightening than a case involving Dajaz1.com. As TechDirt reports, the popular hip-hop blog has been at the epicenter of a sinuous and seemingly dystopian dispute with the feds -- one that underscores the heightening controversy surrounding federal web regulation, and blurs the constitutional divide between free speech and intellectual property protection.

Dajaz1 was initially seized under the 2008 Pro IP Act, on the strength of an affidavit that cited several published songs as evidence of copyright infringement. As it turns out, ,any of these songs were actually provided by their copyright holders themselves, but that didn't stop the government from seizing the URL anyway, and plastering a warning all over its homepage. Typically, this kind of action would be the first phase of a two-step process. Once a property is seized, US law dictates that the government has 60 days to notify its owner, who can then choose to file a request for its return. If the suspect chooses to file this request within a 35-day window, the feds must then undertake a so-called forfeiture process within 90 days. Failure to do so would require the government to return the property to its rightful owner. But that's not exactly how things played out in the case of Dajaz1. For more details on the saga, head past the break.

What an open-source webOS means for Android

webOS on Android

You might have heard -- webOS just got open-sourced today by HP, joining the world of great, free software like Ubuntu, Firefox, and Android.  It's a pretty big deal for some people, including all those developers you see doing wonderful things with the software on their electronic devices.  HP made the right decision here: let the fate of webOS be in the hands of those who know it best -- like the fellows at webOS Internals.  I'll bet there's one hell of a party going on in Oz this evening.

But what does that mean for Android is what we're interested in, because we're Android Central and that's what we do.  The answer?  Maybe a lot, maybe not so much.  While we don't know what open-source license HP plans to release webOS under (remember things like HTC Sense and iOS started as open-source, but the license allowed them to keep code changes to themselves), as it sits now any code that is owned by HP should be made available to manufacturers and developers.  Some of the proprietary bits will stay closed, and provided as something that plugs in to the running system, but those are almost always hardware- or network-specific bits, so we're not too concerned.

The big and important parts will be available for everyone from the CyanogenMod team to Motorola to use and develop further.  You read that right -- we're all thinking "Wow, the CM guys can port stuff from webOS into CM9!" and we're right, but more important is that so can Google and all the OEMs out there.  Soon there will be a few million lines of new code for engineers to look through and cherry pick the best parts from to add to their existing projects -- and that's a damn good thing.

That doesn't mean it will happen though.  The cores of Android and webOS are pretty different, and things won't just drop in and work.  If it were that easy, we'd already have a bastardized version of Meego, Symbian and Android running on some awesome phone from the far east (and I'd totally be using it).  But having the code sitting there so people can see how it's done certainly makes it possible, and very interesting.  And to be honest, simply open-sourcing webOS isn't going to save it.  If someone (like Google or Samsung) steps in and nurtures it and keeps pumping money and ideas into it, it will keep getting better and better.  If nobody but hobbyists cares, it will wither and disappear, even if those hobbyists are talented geniuses like the webOS Internals guys (and gals).

We don't know what will happen here.  Just because something can be done doesn't mean it will be done, and with everyone making money hand over fist with Android there isn't a lot of incentive for big changes.  I'm sure we'll see some ideas brought over, and someone will start porting webOS to things like the Xoom or Galaxy S II, but the big picture may not change a whole lot.  It's going to be an exciting time, and we're lucky that HP made this multi-billion dollar gift to the open source community.
