Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Actress
'The Help' star Viola Davis will likely help herself to a statuette on Sunday.
By Amy Wilkinson
Viola Davis in "The Help"
Photo: DreamWorks
The Oscars love nothing more than a role that allows an actress to a) portray a historical figure or b) completely transform herself physically. (And, lest we forget, some combination thereof, i.e. Charlize Theron's chilling turn as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003's "Monster"). This year's Best Actress field is no exception, with four of the five nominees falling squarely into one of these categories.
Representing real-life ladies we have Meryl Streep as first female British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" and Michelle Williams as breathy blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn." In the transformation category is Rooney Mara, all pierced and tatted as punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," and Glenn Close playing a woman playing a man in the period drama "Albert Nobbs." And the wildcard nominee? "The Help" star Viola Davis.
Yet, despite her non-conformity, Davis may just be the lady going home Sunday night with Oscar. Can anyone top her? Here are our predictions for Best Actress.
Who will win: The big-screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel has been riding a wave of accolades this awards season, notching several wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including awards for Davis, co-star Octavia Spencer and the entire ensemble cast. (In fact, we've already predicted a win for Spencer in the Best Supporting Actress category too.) Despite Williams and Streep both scoring Golden Globes for their respective roles, we expect Davis triumph thanks to her moving portrayal of Southern maid Aibileen Clark in this racially charged, yet uplifting film.
Who should win: Davis is a strong contender to be sure, but going on sheer dedication alone, the trophy should go to relative newcomer Mara. The girl pierced her nipple for goodness' sake! Mara has so embodied Stieg Larsson's embattled heroine that we've been having a hard time separating her on-screen persona from her off-screen, as she continues to walk carpets sporting Salander's raven locks and even darker wardrobe. Sure, the film didn't perform as well as many had hoped, but it had nothing to do with Mara's gritty performance. As it turns out, we're a fool for a good transformation role too.
Who do you think will take home the Oscar for Best Actress? Leave your comment below!

But he also didn't want to actually drink during filming — like he had done before — to play Haymitch.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Woody Harrelson in "The Hunger Games"

Anyone familiar with "The Hunger Games" books knows the character Haymitch Abernathy is mostly memorable for one thing: drunkenness. Sure, his character has a more multifaceted arc over the course of Suzanne Collins' trilogy, but in speaking of the first book and film adaptation, Haymitch's most recognizable trait is his near-constant intoxication.
When MTV News caught up with Woody Harrelson recently, the man who will be bringing the District 12 victor and mentor to life via the big-screen adaptation on March 23, we him how he approached his character's inebriation.
"It's an intriguing thing for me to play, because it's not something I've had that much opportunity to play," Harrelson said. "I was a little bit worried about looking phony, that phony drunk thing. Some Method actors might go drunk onscreen; I can't do that. I tried it one time," he admitted. "When I was doing 'Indecent Proposal,' I had this one scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk, contesting Robert Redford's love for Demi Moore, and I got smashed because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it, and that wasn't a pleasant experience."
Harrelson said he and "Games" director Gary Ross spent time coming up with the right level of inebriation, a point that suited the character but did not completely detract or distract from the story.
"There was a thing with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene, and I was always pushing for more drunk, and he didn't want me to be drunk in every scene," he said. "He was always pulling back, and I was always pushing for more just because I think it's kind of funny and interesting. Knowing Gary, he got the right balance."

'Walking Dead' Creator Bites Into Image Expo
MTV News speaks with Robert Kirkman about what fans of the undead can expect from Oakland, California, convention.

If the worst should happen and a zombie apocalypse occurs this weekend, there's no safer place in America to be than Northern California: "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman will be in Oakland as part of the inaugural Image Expo, greatly increasing your survival odds if a pack of flesh-hungry walkers swarms the scene.
"The Image Expo is an Image-centric comic book convention, so all of the guests have something to do with Image Comics," Kirkman told MTV News during a recent phone interview. "All of the Image founders will be there, as well as new creators who are doing comics with Image this year: Ed Brubaker, Brian K. Vaughan, we have Jonathan Hickman coming here ... all kinds of cool guests."
Running from February 24-26, the first-ever Image Expo makes its debut during the 20th anniversary of Image Comics. Kirkman, a longtime Image reader and current partner at the company, considers the anniversary a milestone achievement for a publisher that originally launched with a very uncertain future.
"There were a lot of naysayers back in 1992 when the company was formed, saying they'd be gone within six months," Kirkman said. "For Image to still be around, still generating new ideas and content and bringing in new creators into the industry, taking a lot of chances on people who've never been published before, that's one of the things that Image does the best. It's really cool that this vision of a company created by creators for creators, that offers the greatest creator-owned deal in the industry and gives everyone the kind of freedom every creator wants to have, is still standing."
Indeed, Image has plenty of new creators to brag about going into 2012. Kirkman identified "Captain America" writer Ed Brubaker's new thriller "Fatale" as one of the books he's most excited for this year. "Y: The Last Man" scribe Brian K. Vaughan's upcoming sci-fi epic "Saga" is another of Kirkman's must-read books in 2012. But Kirkman is equally excited about the arrival of some new creative voices at Image this year, including the company's onetime PR and marketing coordinator Joe Keatinge, who launches a new series titled "Hell Yeah" in early March.
"There are a lot of things he's involved in that I'm very excited about, but the fact that he's launching a creator-owned book, 'Hell Yeah,' is really great," Kirkman said about Keatinge's upcoming projects. "Image is the place that brings in new talent and shepherds them into the comics industry, and I see big things from this Keatinge kid."
Of course, Kirkman has plenty of his own books he's bringing to the table as well. During Image Expo, Kirkman will champion some of his fan-favorite titles including "Walking Dead" and "Invincible," as well as his new comic "Thief of Thieves" that debuted from his Skybound imprint earlier this year.
"It's about a guy named Conrad Paulson who lives a double life as an international thief named Redmond, who is rumored to be the greatest thief who ever lived," Kirkman said of the book's premise. "But he has a problem: he chose his thief life over his personal life, and he has an estranged ex-wife and a son he's never talked to. He has a ton of regrets. The book is about him trying to get his life in order and turned around, turning his back on his career as a thief... but finding that he is completely and utterly unable to do that. He's completely addicted to the thrill of stealing objects. He tries to work around that by working out a way to steal for the greater good."
Taking a page from his "Walking Dead" television experience, Kirkman is implementing a writer's-room approach to "Thief of Thieves." Rather than writing the book all on his own, he's working alongside an unknown number of other writers — including "Morning Glories" scribe Nick Spencer — to add even more voices to his latest creative endeavor.
"It's been a lot of fun working on 'The Walking Dead' in the writer's room. I've grown to respect that method of crafting stories, so I figured I'd give it a shot on a comic book," Kirkman said. "It's cool to sit down with other writers — currently unnamed, but we'll be making announcements soon — and plotting out the story in the same way we'd be doing it on a television show. Having those different brains in the mix, people with different backgrounds generating different ideas and adding to the stew of the story we're putting together is very cool. When you sit down and read the first 25 issues of 'Thief of Thieves,' you're going to see all these different ideas at work. It'll be cool to see how it all comes together."
Kirkman fans traveling to Image Expo to take a bite out of the writer's biggest hit to date, "Walking Dead," won't walk away disappointed either. The convention will host variant editions of "Walking Dead" #94, as well as a select number of limited-edition "Walking Dead" watches. And, of course, there's that little AMC series to consider as well.
"We've got a panel called 'Walking Dead' Live where ['Talking Dead' host] Chris Hardwick will be interviewing myself and [actors Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun] together on a panel," Kirkman said. "We'll get to do that live before a panel audience, which should be pretty exciting. We'll also have autographs, signings, all that cool stuff. We might even play ping pong with people. I cannot confirm that, but we'll see. We're going to be having all kinds of fun!"

Jennifer Aniston Calls 'Wanderlust' Nude Scene No 'Big Deal'
Aniston and co-star Paul Rudd dish on baring it all during our 'First' tomorrow at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com!
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

In the lead-up to the release of the new comedy "Wanderlust," much has been made of Jennifer Aniston's purported nude scene in the film. But when MTV New's Josh Horowitz sat down with Aniston and co-star Paul Rudd for our MTV First on Wednesday, the actress waved off the scene.
"Yeah, big deal!" Aniston said, insisting that most of the talk around the scene was just sensational. "Isn't that a good, fun headline? That's what happens."
"Wanderlust" — fans can preview an exclusive clip when we launch our "First" special Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com — takes place at a commune, where two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers, played by Aniston and Rudd, seek refuge. And when you consider that "Wet, Hot American Summer" helmer David Wain was behind the camera, nudity may seem tame. For Aniston, the scene was just another part of the job.
"At that point, we had been shooting the movie for two months, two-and-a-half months, and the amount of things that we were asked to do that we were just like 'All right,'" Aniston said. "At that point, that was like putting on my shoes."
The duo share the experience of onscreen skin, a fact Aniston felt compelled to share. "You've shown your butt," she said to Rudd.
"Many times," he replied.
"And onscreen as well," Aniston joked. "In the makeup chair, he always never had clothes on."
"I had to get dressed for the shots," Rudd replied. "But when we weren't shooting, I was hanging brain, as it were."
For Aniston, nudity has to matter for where the character is heading in the story, and a crazy, purposeless nude scene would never work. "I think it depends on what the movie is. It felt like it would be gratuitous to do that in a movie like this and it would be more distracting from the movie and what was happening to the character," she explained. "It would all be about, 'Oh, you're naked, so it's boobs onscreen,' so it would totally lose the fun and the empowering moment [my character], Linda, was having in that scene."
One of Aniston's co-stars, however, does show a fair amount of skin, even if he's wearing a prosthetic penis.
"Joe Lo Truglio, the first night he came out with his prosthetic penis, within five minutes we were all touching it," Aniston revealed. "We were touching it, and we were examining it. It was just so interesting. It was just right there, underneath it. I think first night of shooting, I could resist, there was the beginning of many, many butt slaps."
Catch Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston tomorrow on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET, when they'll debut an exclusive, never-before-seen clip from "Wanderlust." Then head over to MTV.com for our 30-minute chat with Rudd and Aniston.

'This Means War': The Reviews Are In!
Critics aren't buying into the love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.
By Kara Warner
Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in "This Means War"
Photo: 20th Century Fox
"This Means War" has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Sherlock Holmes," "Role Models" and "Just Go With It."
The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn't seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Read on as we fight through the "This Means War" reviews!
The Story
"Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp 'This Means War' more tolerable that it ought to be. It's essentially a love-triangle version of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," rendered even more bombastic in the hands of "Charlie's Angels" director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you've got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. They promise their shared pursuit won't ruin their friendship, but good luck with all that." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press
The Bromance Factor
"The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. ... Hardy ('Inception') and Pine ('Star Trek') are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters' cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they're sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it's a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof
"And in the film's opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It's loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn't in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from 'There's Something About Mary,' but for imitating it so badly." — Ian Buckwalter, NPR
The Final Word
"Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie's Angels), and it's had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn't take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet ... I confess I enjoyed everything that's all over the place about the finished product. 'This Means War' may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there's this going for it: It's game to throw in anything that'll keep the motor running." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

'Friday Night Lights' Movie Still In The Works
'We're not done with 'Friday Night Lights,' ' executive producer Peter Berg tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Taylor Kitsch on the "Friday Night Lights" TV series
Photo: NBC
The last time we checked in on a potential movie based on the "Friday Night Lights" TV series, star Taylor Kitsch told MTV News that he knew just as much as we did. "I hear hearsay and all this kind of stuff," Kitsch said, adding that executive producer Peter Berg could always make it happen. "If Pete sets his mind to something, he'll usually get it done."
MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Berg himself at a "Battleship" preview at Toy Fair in New York, and we asked for an update on the movie.
"Jason Katims, who was our super talented show-runner, is about done with the script," Berg said. "You never know. So much of these things become scheduling. Kyle [Chandler] is busy, Adrianne [Palicki] is busy, Taylor is busy, Connie Britton is busy, but if we can get everyone in the same room at the same time, we all want to do it. We're not done with 'Friday Night Lights.' "
Speaking to a potential plotline, Berg said they plan to involve some real-life elements pegged to former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach but that things will revolve around Coach and Tami Taylor from the TV series.
"[Katims] has come up with a really great storyline that parallels what happened to Mike Leach, one of my heroes, a coach at Texas Tech who was unjustly fired and unjustly accused of mistreating a player with a concussion, which was proven to not have been the case. He's now at Washington State getting ready for what I think will be a great redemption story," Berg explained. "It would be critical that we get Kyle and Connie [onboard for the film] — we anchored the show around them — and then bring in Riggins, Tyra, Lyla and all other characters as we could get them. But the idea is to really revolve it around the coach."
Kitsch seemed to have reservations about returning to his beloved character, but he's open to a cameo. "I loved the way I left Riggs," Kitsch said when asked if he'd like to continue on with the character. "You never know. Maybe a little cameo or something. We'll see if he even wants me in it."

Exclusive: Adele's Surgeon Calls Grammy Performance 'Totally Inspirational'
'I think she sounded great,' Dr. Steven Zeitels tells MTV News after performing singer's vocal surgery.
By Gil Kaufman

The world heard on Sunday night just how far Adele has come since facing serious surgery in November to repair damage to her vocal cords. But there was one person in the room at the 2012 Grammys who had an extra-big grin on his face when the night's big winner made a triumphant return to the stage: her surgeon.
"I thought her performance was just totally inspirational," said Dr. Steven Zeitels, the surgeon who performed the microsurgical procedure to stop a bleeding benign polyp on the singer's vocal cords. The Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center and Eugene B. Casey Professor of Laryngeal Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Zeitels told MTV News that he could hardly contain his joy at watching his latest success story make her triumphant comeback.
"I think she sounded great," he said of her powerful run through "Rolling in the Deep." "If you know what her mechanics were like [before the surgery], in the second half of the song, she was just blowing it away."
And the good news, for Adele and her fans, is that as far as Zeitels is concerned, the 21 star can consider her vocal cords fully open for business again. "I think she can do anything she wants. If anything, she's better than before. The only thing I hear is that she's cleaner and clearer, which is not surprising." He said that when the performance was over, his wife looked at him and just shook her head and said, "Yup."
Though the surgeon could not speak to any of the specifics of Adele's condition or her recovery due to doctor/patient confidentiality, Zeitels did reveal that he was at the Grammys as a guest of the Grammy Foundation, which is in discussions about teaming with him to put on a concert or a series of shows featuring some of his famous clients to raise money for the kinds of surgeries that can help restore countless other voices.
"[Adele's] case has become the most visual one in the history of voice surgery," said Zeitels, who has worked similar wonders with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, the Who's Roger Daltrey, Cher and KISS' Paul Stanley, among many others. "With Adele, we wanted it to go right the first time," he said of his recommendation that the singer rest her voice for several months before re-emerging at the Grammys. "[That performance] was a testament to ... the view now is that all kinds of people can be restored and repaired and people have contacted us from all over the world. People didn't know how many things could be fixed."
Zeitels said that when he operates on a singer, chances are he not only makes whatever problem they have better, but he also gives them a shot at advancing their career and singing, which leads to more referrals. His latest success story is "Jar of Hearts" singer Christina Perri, who came to him to remove a congenital mass on her vocal cords that she'd had since birth. "She could sing before, but she can really sing now," he said.
While Adele's label could not be reached for comment on what her future plans are in regards to resuming her touring schedule, Zeitels said that as far as he's concerned, his former patient could hit the road whenever she's ready.
"I think she was a bit nervous," he said when asked about what sounded like a few tricky notes during the Grammy performance. "But who wouldn't be? ... From my perspective, she can tour tomorrow. She's healed and looks wonderful. It was an outstanding result."
As to whether she is under any restrictions to avoid re-injuring her instrument, Zeitels said the short answer is no. "She just has to be sensible," he explained. "There are no restrictions, but like a running back with a hurt knee, she could have a problem again but it doesn't happen very frequently."

Why CES 2012 should have been called the Cloud Electronics Show
I watched the new product announcements at CES 2012 with much more interest this year. Why? Because the use of cloud computing has gone from few and far between to pretty much anything and everything. CES 2012 shows that shift in no uncertain terms.
