Must See HDTV (October 31st - November 6th)

The World Series is finally over and TV schedules have settled into their normal fall pace. Fox has its lineup set and is finally ready to air new episodes of Bones again, while those waiting more Blu-ray 3D movies have several to choose from. Both the Toy Story and Shrek series come home in the format this week along with the debut of Cars 2, and Uncharted 3 offers 3D support on the gaming side. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Update: Commenter Bervick reminds us the Steve Jobs - One More Thing special airs on PBS November 2nd. Check the official site for airtimes on your local station.

Burn Notice
If you listen to the HD podcast, then you know this is one of our favorite shows. Michael Westin is a "burned" spy who bides his time trying to get back into the CIA by picking up odd jobs helping people around Miami Macguyver-style. Throw in a best friend played by Bruce Campbell and a health assortment of explosions and gunfire, and you've got everything we could ask for -- except better picture quality, but you can't have everything.
(November 3rd, USA, 10PM)

LSU vs. Alabama
This is what we like the most about college football. We're deep enough into the season that a 1 vs 2-ranked matchup actually means something and we couldn't have two better teams ready to face off. Both have won national championships, both are incredibly talented and well coached. Who will win? we'll have to watch to find out.
(November 5th, CBS, 8PM)

Hell on Wheels
So far AMC's switch from broadcasting classic movies to mixing in original programming has had its standout successes (Mad Men, Breaking Bad), and disappointments in The Killing and The Walking Dead. Sunday night it launches its latest effort, Hell on Wheels, which follows a former Confederate soldier hunting down the Union soldiers responsible for killing his wife. The name comes from the Nebraska town he ends up in along his quest that follows the construction of the railroad across the country. an interesting concept to be sure, we'll have to lay our eyes on it to know which category this one falls into -- check out a trailer embedded after the break.
(November 6th, AMC, 10PM)

Insert Coin: Ray solar charger adheres to your window, basks in the sunlight

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

The most frustrating products are the ones that have such simple ideas, you're upset that it hasn't been done before -- or that you weren't the one that came up with it. No idea is so simple as the brilliant Ray solar charger. A mobile phone juicer that comes with a kickstand and built-in suction cup so that it's nearly always pointed right at the sun. If you think that sounds like simple madness or genius, click past the break to find out why it could be worth your investment.

Alan Belcher will sit in a kennel to save puppies

Alan Belcher will sit in a kennel to save puppiesComing off a big win at Ultimate Fight Night 25, Alan Belcher could sit back and enjoy the big win, or he could sit inside a dog's kennel in Mississippi to encourage pet adoptions. Belcher has chosen to do that latter. To the press release:

On Friday, October 14, Alan "The Talent" Belcher will be at Humane Society of Southern Mississippi's facility on Hwy 49 to promote pet adoption in conjunction with HSSM's efforts in the ASPCA $100K Challenge. Belcher will be locked inside one of Humane Society's kennels i.e. "the cage" and available for autographs and photo opportunities to adopters starting at 2pm. Belcher will not be released from his kennel until HSSM has completed 50 adoptions (or 8 p.m., whichever comes first.)

The catch is that you can get a picture or autograph with Belcher if you adopt a pet, but that sounds like a win-win. You get to meet Belcher and you get a pet. Plus, adoptions will be discounted on Oct. 14, meaning you can adopt a dog or a cat for less than $20.

Bottom line: Puppies are awesome, and Belcher is awesome for sitting in a kennel to advocate for them. Find out more about the event here.

UPDATED: Read on for more pictures of Belcher, a 17-6 fighter with 8 knockouts or TKOs, become a total softie for his dog.

Nokia Asha 200, Asha 300 and Asha 303 hands-on (video)

You know, Nokia wasn't only firing its first Windows Phone salvo -- there was also a volley of Series 40 handsets, with the Asha family. First up is the dual-SIM capable Nokia 200. The phone itself bears a strong resemblance to the C3-00, with a non-touchable screen and QWERTY keyboard, priced, pre-tax, at €60 (about $85). Nokia promises admirable battery-life and a rainbow of color choices.

Up next is the Nokia 300, pairing a 2.4-inch resistive touchscreen with a numbered keypad, with a long narrow frame very similar to last year's Nokia C3, but now toting a 1GHz processor, five megapixel shooter and a €85 (about $120) bounty. Meanwhile, €115 (about $160) will net you the Nokia 303, which brings together both touchscreen and QWERTY input and rocks a 3.2 megapixel camera. While Nokia's first Windows Phones remain the stars of the show, these sub-$200 prices and pre-2012 arrival will tempt residual Series 40 fans still out there. Skip on past the break for a brimful of Asha.

Nikon D300s travels to the edge of space, survives to share the results

If you're going to go to the trouble of sending a camera to the edge of space, you might as well send one capable of doing the trip justice, right? That hasn't always been the case with similar DIY attempts (for obvious reasons), but the team behind the so-called Cygnus "spacecraft" decided to go all out when they sent their weather balloon / beer cooler contraption aloft this month to photograph the curvature of the Earth. In this case, going all out meant sending a Nikon D300s DSLR equipped with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, which managed to capture some stunning pictures like the one you see above -- although some got a bit obscured by ice build-up. There's more where that came from at the Flickr link below, and you can check out a video of the launch after the break.

[Thanks, Udi]

Earnhardt plays house with team Schumacher

Earnhardt Collection Homes

In the effort to leave no marketing stone unturned, a member of the Earnhardt family has teamed up with a custom home builder to create an exclusive line of houses. Kerry Earnhardt, the eldest son of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., has aligned forces with Paul Schumacher of Schumacher homes. Needless to say, this Schumacher has no affiliation with the racing legend.

Each house is named after a particular memory from the lives of Earnhardt and his wife, Rene. One design, Pocono, honors the track at which Kerry Earnhardt won his first race, while one of the largest plans, Giant Sequoia, is crafted as a tip of the hat to the larger-than-life presence of Dale senior.

All told, there are 19 home designs to choose from. You can check them out by heading over to the Schumacher site for a closer look. In a quasi-related note, Road & Track reports that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. recently said that he'd like to see Michael Schumacher hop across the pond for a quick stint behind the wheel of a Sprint Cup racer.

Microsoft reveals Data Explorer tool, gets into the sorbet business (video)

Redmond houses quite a few little teams beavering away on quirky projects and one of those has just gone public with its latest creation. It's codenamed "Data Explorer", which perhaps isn't an ideal codename since it describes exactly what the enterprise-focused service does. Instead of manually searching and copying data into a report, Data Explorer pulls information from SQL databases, spreadsheets and other "random sources" that could be relevant, and then attempts to "clean it up, transform it, merge it together and then publish it out" as a coherent report. You can learn more and sign up for the beta at the source link, or click past the break to watch a Microsoft exec demo the tool using a real-world case study -- we found it a bit dense, but you'll be fine as long as you remember that kids love frozen yogurt.

UFC 136 picks, Vegas-style: Florian might be best value play at plus-300

UFC 136 picks, Vegas-style: Florian might be best value play at plus-300

The UFC's deepest card of the year presents some pretty interesting gambling challenges. One title fight is basically a toss-up while the other is being booked as a blowout.

Frank Edgar is still a small favorite over a guy he's 0-1-1 against in Gray Maynard. Edgar is minus-130 with Maynard coming back at plus-110.

The bettors don't feel the same about Kenny Florian as an underdog. He's as big as plus-350. Jose Aldo hasn't lost a fight since 2005 and has won all nine of his fights under the Zuffa banner.

Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined me on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas to breakdown the card and make his picks. Listen here for audio.

UFC 136 betting odds:

Best bets in bold

Gray Maynard (+110) vs. Frank Edgar (-130)- UFC lightweight title

Jose Aldo (-360) vs. Kenny Florian (+300) - UFC featherweight title

Demian Maia (-300) vs. Jorge Santiago (+250) - Middleweight

Leonard Garcia (+200) vs. Nam Phan (-240) - Featherweight

Chael Sonnen (-250) vs. Brian Stann (+210)- Middleweight

Melvin Guillard (-410) vs. Joe Lauzon (+330)- Lightweight

Jeremy Stephens (+240) vs. Anthony Pettis (-280)- Lightweight

Eric Schafer (+325) vs. Aaron Simpson (-400)- Middleweight

Steve Cantwell (-135) vs. Mike Massenzio (+115) - Middleweight

Darren Elkins (+110) vs. Tie Quan Zhang (-130) - Featherweight

Video: Anderson Silva dancing with Justin Bieber. No, really.

Anderson Silva recently defended his middleweight title at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro. What does the pound-for-pound king do to kick back after a hard training camp? Maybe spend some time on the beach, hang out with his family, go ballroom dancing, or enjoy some burgers from his sponsor?

Nope. He dances on-stage with Justin Bieber.

Yes, that's the tween sensation dancing with the UFC middleweight champ as Brazilian girls scream like, well, little girls. It's funny to hear the fathers join in on the screaming when they see Silva take the stage.

This isn't Bieber's first close encounter with fighters, as he has been to UFC fights before. He tweeted his thanks to UFC president Dana White after attending UFC 132, and the subsequent Twitter replies crashed White's phone.

There's no avoiding it. Mixed martial arts and Bieber Fever go hand in hand.

Thanks to Middle Easy.

Spy Shots: 2013 Ford Flex shows the way with revised schnoz

Spy photographers have managed to snap a fairly clear look at what the next iteration of the Ford Flex will bring to the table. If these photos are any indication, the crossover will wear a mild facelift that includes updates to the vehicle's grille, fog lights and front fascia as well as new badging. Expect to see new brightwork surrounding both the grille and the vehicle's headlights along with a restyled bumper cap. If that's not pulse-quickening enough for you, it looks as if Ford will also roll in a new fog-light design with a slimmer housing.

The rear of the vehicle will also receive a quick nip and tuck with a reworked bumper cap. We're guessing the rear hatch area may see some attention as well given the heavy camouflage present on this particular test vehicle. Word has it Flex buyers will also get a shot at MyFord Touch for the first time when the vehicle makes its way to dealer lots. Stay tuned.

There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

Recently retired fighter Chris Lytle hinted at a future in politics while still in his fighting career. Now that he has given up fighting and is just a firefighter and the father of four children, Lytle has decided to fill up his scads of free time by running for the Indiana State Senate.

Lytle is well-known of one of MMA's good guys, always ready to share his time with a fan or a member of the media. Over the course of his 11-year career, he continued to serve as a firefighter. In the cage, he was the kind of fighter fans always wanted to watch because he was always willing to put on a good show, winning 10 fight night bonuses from the UFC.

Now, Lytle wants to put those qualities to work in the state government. He has already started campaigning, visiting future constituents all over the 28th district and using the tagline, "Fighting for Indiana's Future." Though it's been more than a month since his retirement bout, a submission of Dan Hardy, Lytle is sporting a black eye in many of his pictures. He probably had a fun time explaining that to the people at the senior citizen's center.

CinemaNow strikes deal with Intel, adds new movies in 1080p HD

CinemaNow's movie library is about to get a bit larger and a good deal sharper, thanks to a new deal with Intel. Yesterday, the video on-demand service announced that it's now offering a slate of 1080p HD movies for the first time, available on PCs packing a second generation Intel Core CPU. According to the company, "several hundred" new releases and other popular films from 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have already been added to its library, in addition to the 15,000 movies and TV shows already on file. CinemaNow didn't offer an exact number of titles, nor did it provide names of any specific films, but you can stream through the entire press release for yourself, after the break.

Couture and Larkin grind their way to wins at Strikeforce Challengers 19

Couture and Larkin grind their way to wins at Strikeforce Challengers 19

Nick Rossborough and Maka Watson were supposed to stepping stones tonight in Las Vegas. Maybe they didn't get the message, because both scatched and clawed for three rounds. Super prospect Lorenz Larkin got by Rossborough and Ryan Couture, son of UFC legend Randy, edged Watson, but they both had to earn their wins at Strikeforce Challengers 19.

The 29-year-old Couture is just four fights into his pro career but all four have been on nationally televised Showtime cards. He was coming off a loss, but showed that he's learning what his strengths are and playing to them.

Couture was a solid high school wrestler and he's taken his MMA grappling to another level, but when he lost to Matt Ricehouse back in June he relied too much on his striking. Tonight, he went back to his bread and butter to score a split decision victory, 29-28, 29-28 and 28-28, and gas Watson by the final minutes of the fight.

"He's tough as nails. That was not that fun, but I'm real glad to get the W," Couture said. "Some things went according to plan and other things I didn't do as well. I wasn't very sharp when he was on top."

Couture (4-1) turned to his grappling from the opening seconds of the fight when he jumped on Watson's back and got the fight to the mat. He controlled him on the ground and worked for various chokes for nearly four minutes. With 45 seconds left, Watson was able to escape and get top control. He got off a nasty elbow to slice open a bloody cut on Couture's forehead.

In the second, Couture once again got the fight to the mat and controlled things until two minutes left. This time when Watson, got top control he got off nasty elbows and most of his shots went unanswered. In third, Couture got it to the ground for the final 3:45 of the fight to seal the victory.

Couture and Larkin grind their way to wins at Strikeforce Challengers 19No one is expecting Couture to make a run at a title, but Larkin may be a different story. He's one the best strikers to come along in a while at light heavyweight. He got a tough draw tonight in the 6-foot-5 Rossborough, but was still able to win a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. Larkin was a minus-700 favorite entering the fight.

Larkin is a smallish 205-pounder while Rossborough's a guy who just fought at heavyweight three weeks ago. Rossborough (18-14-2) chose to fight in close quarters along the cage and Larkin seemed willing to brawl. It actually cost him over the first two rounds as Rossborough stayed in the fight and scored well with his dirty boxing.

In the third, the big weight cut may have taken its toll on Rossborough. with four and half minutes left in the fight, he got caught by a beautiful knee to the body out of the clinch. After a delayed reaction, Rossborough fell to his back. Larkin poured it on while on top with some vicious elbows. A well-placed left elbow busted open Rossborough's forehead. He made it to the bell, but was covered with blood.

This was a good learning experience for Larkin (12-0). Because his best attributes are his speed, variety and movement, there was no need to brawl along the cage. He couldn't use any of those skills while locked up along the fence against a guy who was six inches taller.

"He came to fight. He was hungry. That's what I want. I couldn't ask for nothing better. I love how he pushed me. How he was hitting me. That's what makes me tough," said Larkin.

Mango kills Microsoft's always-on location tracking, makes good on letter to House of Representatives

Remember all that iPhone tracking hubbub back in April? Sure you do -- you probably also recall Apple's denial, the subsequent Senate hearing, and the rest of the fiasco's dramatic fallout. Amid the ballyhoo, Microsoft stepped out to admit that its Windows Phone also collected location data, but quickly promised to knock it off following the next scheduled update. According to ChevronWP7 collaborator Rafael Rivera, Windows Phone 7.5 cinches it: Mango "no longer sends location data prior to being granted permission to do so." Redmond previously told the US House of Representatives that it only collected location data if a user expressly allowed an application to send it along -- a claim which Rivera debunked last week, noting that simply launching the camera application captured and transmitted "pin-point accurate positioning information." The big M maintains that the collected location data was anonymous, and that it shouldn't have been sent at all unless the user allowed it. Either way, Microsoft's chapter in the big location tracking blunder of 2011 seems to be at a close, squaring the firm with Congress, its developers, and hopefully its customers.
